More people are using cycling as a way to stay healthy, save money, and commute to and from work. Because of the increased numbers of bicycle commuters and recreational riders, there is a rising need and responsibility to provide adequate bicycle parking at your facility.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has developed a set of regulations requiring all residential and commercial buildings to maintain a certain number of bicycle parking spaces. Having the right plan for your bicycle parking room will ensure that it is a convenient, safe and efficient space and compliant with all DDOT regulations.

At Bike Room Designs we begin with a one-on-one consultation to talk about your bicycle storage needs and requirements. We take into consideration the space you have to work with, your ideal number of bicycles to store, all applicable municipal regulations and your budget. We then prepare a quote and a set of drawings of the completed bike room.

Once the final design is approved, we work with our manufacturing partners to deliver and our installers to install your bicycle parking racks. We also offer and install amenities such as repair stands, air pumps, lockers, benches, etc to make your bike room as personalized as you like. 

 

Regulations + LEED Credits

Not only does bike parking increase demand for your property, in DC it is required by municipal code. We can help you navigate the requirements and regulations for your residential or commercial building so that you are in compliance.

DC Regulations

Bicycle parking is required in all DC buildings constructed after 1985. Bicycle parking must be:

  • Accessible from the building and street or other bike right-of-way.

  • Secure, well-lit, and located within the building on the ground floor, basement or first garage level.

The number of bicycle parking spaces required are dependent on the number of car parking spaces required and year the building was built.

  • In most commercial buildings, the number of bicycle parking spaces must equal one space for each 10,000 square feet of commercial office space. In residential buildings the formula is one bicycle parking space for every three residential units. Variations in space requirements can be found here.

  • In buildings built before March 1, 1985, 1% of the amount of required parking spaces can be converted to bike parking spaces.

LEED Credits

DC continues to lead the nation in green building. Bicycle facilities in new construction can gain developers points toward their LEED certification. LEED's Bicycle Facilities credit is intended to:

  • Promote bicycling and transportation efficiency and reduce vehicle distance traveled.

  • Improve public health by encouraging physical activity.
